University of Toronto Entrepreneurship Mandate

University of Toronto (U of T) is Canada’s leading engine for research-based startups and a global leader in transforming ideas into products and services that impact the world.

The University of Toronto Entrepreneurship (UTE) community does much more than accelerate startups. It accelerates ideas, people, social impact, and technologies too. All while striving to create an environment that is inclusive and representative of the diverse and talented innovators and entrepreneurs around it.

UTE’s mission is is to enable a diverse group of creative thinkers to move their ingenious ideas from conception to impact by capitalizing on U of T’s global research capacity, its deep talent pool, and its unmatched entrepreneurship and innovation network.

The U of T Entrepreneurship community consists of 10+ accelerators across the University’s three campuses. UTE supports, develops and celebrates its best and brightest founders and their startups through a broad range of resources, network access and entrepreneurship activities.

University of Toronto Entrepreneurship Priorities

One of U of T Entrepreneurship’s 2021-22 strategic priorities was to build a new website that is as innovative as the entrepreneurial community it serves.

You can learn about UTE’s priorities by reading its latest Annual Report and the University’s Institutional Strategic Research Plan. The University of Toronto Entrepreneurship is part of the Division of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation (VPRI).

Types of Support University of Toronto Entrepreneurship Offers

University of Toronto Entrepreneurship offers accelerator and entrepreneurship programs, coaching, mentorship, networking opportunities, funding, pitch competitions and more.

University of Toronto Entrepreneurship Programs

  • St. George Campus accelerators:
  • BFN Accelerate is a three-month classic cohort-based accelerator program for startup companies from the U of T community with at least one Black-identifying founder. BFN Accelerate will help you develop solutions to meet the customer’s needs, launch of MVP/beta, start to grow your team, generate revenue, secure funding and explore value chain/distribution partnerships. 
  • Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) (non-profit organization founded at the Rotman School of Management .)
  • Faculty of Arts and Science’s Centre for Entrepreneurship supports entrepreneurs by providing:
    • Co-working space
    • Prototyping & Makerspace offers facilities equipped with what students and alumni need to build prototypes for their ventures.
    • Venture Perks – a suite of venture-friendly perks, discounts, and offerings provided in partnership with UTE.
  • University of Toronto Scarborough accelerators:
  • University of Toronto Mississauga accelerator:
  • University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies accelerator:
  • Start@UTIAS – program in partnership with The Entrepreneurship Hatchery
  • U of T Startup Perks: a suite of venture-friendly offerings for companies affiliated with the U of T Entrepreneurship community.
  • IP Education Program: a free, online training program. Level 1 of the IP Education Program is now freely available to individuals outside the University of Toronto.
  • Indo-Canadian Entrepreneurship Exchange Program: a cohort-based exchange program, which aims to support budding entrepreneurs, improve research collaboration, and establish a strong, two-way innovation talent pipeline. The program is offered by the University of Toronto in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) and the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE).
