Canada Council for the Arts – Indigenous Organizations Component of Creating, Knowing and Sharing: The Arts and Cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples

Description:

The Creating, Knowing and Sharing program provides grants to support activities in three broad areas:

  1. Creating provides support for research, production and creation of new works of art.

  2. Knowing provides support for the retention, maintenance, innovation and transmittal of cultural knowledge and creative practice.

  3. Sharing provides support for the dissemination, exhibition, presentation and distribution of works of art by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, which enrich and engage communities in Canada and abroad.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a grant of up to:

  1. 60% of total annual revenues, averaged over the last 3 years for organizations that meet Category A criteria;
  2. 60% of total annual revenues, averaged over the last 3 years for organizations that meet Category B criteria;
  3. $100,000 per year for organizations that meet Category C criteria; and
  4. $100,000 per year for organizations that meet Category D criteria.

Application Assistance funding is available for persons who are Deaf or who have disabilities, including those living with mental illness, and require accommodation at any stage of the application process.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be either:

  • an organization presently receiving core (operating) support from this component; or
  • an Indigenous publisher, Indigenous arts service organization or other Indigenous not-for-profit organization and meet all the following criteria:
    a) completed at least 2 consecutive years of artistic or cultural activity;
    b) have received 1 composite grant or Long Term grant or 2 Canada Council project grants in the last 5 years;
    c) have a board of directors or an identified governance group with oversight and decision-making authority, made up of at least 60% First Nations, Inuit or Métis individuals.

Eligibility criteria for Category A:
Applicants (organizations) must:

  • have a mandate and primary activities concerned with artistic practice;
  • have artistic and/or cultural activities that are national and international in scope;
  • have been in continuous operation for at least 10 years; and
  • have a total annual operating budget greater than $500 000, averaged over the last 3 years.

Eligibility criteria for Category B:
Applicants (organizations) must:

  • have a mandate and primary activities concerned with artistic practice;
  • have artistic and/or cultural activities that are regional and/or national and/or international in scope;
  • have been in continuous operation for at least 7 years; and
  • have a total annual operating budget greater than $250 000, averaged over the last 3 years.

Eligibility criteria for Category C:
Applicants (organizations) must:

  • have a mandate and primary activities concerned with artistic and/or cultural practice; and
  • have been in continuous operation for at least 3 years.
    Applicants (non-arts-specific organizations) must:
  • be multi-faceted cultural organizations with regular and formalized artistic programming; and
  • have had ongoing artistic programming for 3 previous years.

Eligibility criteria for Category D:
Applicants (organizations) must:

  • qualify as an Indigenous Arts Service Organization.
  • qualify as an Indigenous Publisher.

    Applicant must submit:

    1. support material including samples of recent activities or programming;
    2. letters of support demonstrating community involvement, if applicable;
    3. detailed job descriptions of key creative/administrative positions;
    4. a translation of their application into French or English (must be submitted by the Translation deadline date) unless they request that the Canada Council provides their translation;
    5. for book publishers:
      a) a representative sample of up to 5 books published during the last 2 years;
      b) a list of upcoming titles, writers and genres; and
      c) a sample contract with writers.
    6. for magazine publishers:
      a) for print magazines – 7 copies of 4 different magazine issues published during the last 2 years;
      b) for electronic magazines – 4 magazine issues published during the last 2 years, by weblink (hyperlink) or PDF;
      c) a list of upcoming themes and writers, if known;
      d) a fee schedule for writers; and
      e) a sample contract with writers.

    Other Things to Note:

    1. PEFIP is a 10 year program (beginning 2021-2022) providing almost $647 million to help supply-managed poultry and egg producers adapt to market changes resulting from the implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
    2. Applicants have the flexibility to seek funding for eligible activities that started on or after March 19, 2019. The project activities must be completed by March 31, 2031.
    3. Project Applications must be received before March 31, 2030, which is the end of the 9th year of the program. To help ensure that program funding is fully utilized, PEFIP may re-allocate (in consultation with the national marketing organizations) any unused funding in the program’s 10th and final year in 2031.
