Canada Media Fund (CMF) – Convergent Stream – Versioning Program

Description:

The Versioning Program is designed to both increase the reach of existing programming to Canadians through language versioning, and increase the revenue earned by Canadian producers through national and international sales.

Comments on Funding:

Funding will be no more than 75% of the Television Component’s Eligible Costs or the amount stated (the lesser of) in the following:
1. for Drama, Children’s and Youth, and Animation – $418/minute
2. for Documentary and Variety and Performing Arts – $180/minute
The Maximum Contribution provided by the CMF shall be 75% of the Digital Media Component’s Eligible Costs.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be for-profit production company
  • be Canadian-controlled as determined in sections 26 to 28 of the Investment Canada Act
  • have its head office in Canada
  • be in good standing with all applicable talent and industry associations and guilds. OR
  • be a Canadian Broadcaster, such as:

a) a Canadian programming undertaking, public or private, licensed to operate by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC);
b) an online service owned, controlled and operated by a Canadian CRTC-licensed programming undertaking;
c) an online service owned, controlled and operated by a Canadian broadcasting distribution undertaking (“BDU”), licensed to operate by the CRTC; and
d) CRTC-licensed VOD services.
Where the Applicant is a distribution entity, it must hold distribution rights to the project that is the subject of the application.

Applications Steps:

Applicants must:

Upon submission, applicants will receive a confirmation with an application number. For information on the status of their application, applicants must contact the Funding Application office in their region.

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must submit:

  • a written confirmation that the dubbed or subtitled version of will be made available in the target market;
  • a copy of the completed original language project;
  • a letter from a broadcaster committing to air the versioned language project in Canada or abroad within one year of delivery;
  • a letter from a broadcaster or a digital distributor confirming distribution and exploitation plan
  • copies of any sale of the versioned language project;
  • details of financial participation of other investors, if applicable;
  • versioning budget;
  • all documentation demonstrating that the applicant holds all the requisite rights to distribute the versioned language project in the target market;
  • declaration of the corporation’s Canadian status, and its shareholders and directors;
  • complete incorporation documents;
  • corporate profile including company mandate for all applicants, co-applicants and parent companies, as applicable;
  • shareholder’s or partner’s agreement, if applicable;
  • corporate secretary’s certificate;
  • financial statements (for the past three years for all television component applicants, co-applicants and parent companies).
