The Innovation for Defense Excellence and Security (Ideas) program is meant to address current and future challenges faced by Canada's Armed Forces. It provides creative thinkers with the structure and support to encourage solutions, which will assist in solving some of Canada’s toughest defense and security challenges. There are multiple funding options to orient the best research towards innovation challenges: competitive projects, contests and sandboxes.

When It Ends:

Applicants must be:

  •  from small and large companies;
  • academia;
  • non-profit organizations;
  • individuals;
  • in any specific industry, region, or domain (no preference for any).

IDEaS will favour innovation that is developed in Canada, but is seeking the best solutions wherever they exist. Each Call for Proposal will describe the minimum Canadian Content desired; typically between 50-80%.

Application Steps:

Each IDEaS element has its own criteria and specific web-based application process. Visit the IDEaS Opportunities Page for more details.
Please note that innovators are welcome to apply to multiple challenges.

Other Things to Note:

There are multiple calls for proposals each year for identified innovation challenges. Applicants must check the details of the specific call for proposals they are interested in.
