Mitacs Elevate is a postdoctoral fellowship with an exclusive professional development curriculum component.

Mitacs Elevate fellows receive:

  1. $55,000 minimum annual stipend/salary.
  2. $70,000 minimum annual stipend/salary for projects addressing at least one of the key priority sectors of artificial intelligence, biomanufacturing, clean tech, or quantum science.

Applicant’s partner organization’s financial contribution starts at $30,000.

Successful applicants receive a Mitacs Elevate award of $60,000 per year, renewable for a second year, for a total award of $120,000, as well as the mandatory research management training curriculum ($8,000 non-cash value over two years); a minimum stipend / salary of $55,000 per year is allocated to the fellow and up to $5,000 is allocated to research costs. Mitacs follows tri-council guidelines with respect to the use of funds towards eligible research costs.

Awards are typically forwarded annually as a lump sum of $60,000 to the supervising faculty member, to be held as a research grant at their home university, pending Mitacs receipt of the following:

– the $30,000 annual partner contribution

– where applicable, documentation that a $5,000 annual contribution will be made available to the fellow in lieu of provincial funding.

Postdoctoral fellow eligibility:

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international applicants. The fellow must be based at a university located in Canada for the duration of the fellowship.
  • Postdoctoral fellows may apply for Mitacs Elevate fellowship if their date of graduation from a PhD program is no more than 5 years prior to the proposed start date the Elevate project, unless:
  • Fellows who have had a break in their career due to military service, illness, or family leave may be considered exceptions and must be approved in advance of application;

  • Successful candidates must have fulfilled all degree requirements (e.g., successful defense, final deposit, and signoff of dissertation) for their PhD, ), meet the postdoctoral fellow eligibility criteria at their home academic institution, hold a postdoctoral fellow status for the entire duration of their Mitacs Elevate fellowship
  • They can commit to the two-year Mitacs Elevate fellowship, including the exclusive professional development curriculum. Replacement or substitute fellows are not allowed.
  • Fellows must not have been employed for more than six months in an R&D position outside the university after receipt of their doctoral degree; and must not have received an offer of employment from the partner organization except an offer of this fellowship or short-term employment of up to six months while awaiting a decision on the fellowship.
  • Fellows who have held a Mitacs Accelerate award as a Masters, or PhD student are eligible to apply as long as they have not completed more than one year (three internship units equivalent) of Mitacs Accelerate at postdoctoral level. This must be completed before the start of the Mitacs Elevate fellowship.
  • Fellows cannot apply to multiple Mitacs programs for the same period of time.

Eligible partner organizations to Elevate include:

  • For-profit corporations and crown corporations receiving no more than 50% of their revenues from government sources.
  • Not-for-profit (NFP) corporations, such as industry associations, charitable organizations, and economic development organizations.

NOTE: Please contact Mitacs to discuss the eligibility of an NFP organization before submission of the completed application package All research projects in collaboration with an NFP corporations must demonstrate an economic or productivity orientation such as creating new jobs, reducing costs of goods or services, or increasing productivity in a process or industry.

  • They are a hospital or municipality in Canada.
  • Please contact Mitacs to discuss the eligibility of projects with hospitals, or municipalities before submission of the completed application package

All research projects in collaboration with a hospital, or municipality must demonstrate an economic or productivity orientation such as creating new jobs, reducing costs of goods or services, or increasing productivity in a process or industry.

All Mitacs Elevate partner organizations must be Canadian or a Canadian location of a foreign-owned organization. They should be end-users of the research and must have an office or site where the fellow undertakes at least 50% of the fellowship interacting with the partner.

    Other Things to Note:

    1. At this time, we anticipate announcing the awards in March 2022 for Elevate thematic applications and June 2022 for Elevate standard applications.

    3. New for our Fall 2021 call! Eligible applicants are welcome to apply for our Elevate thematic funding opportunity for a total research grant of $80,000 per year for projects addressing at least one of the key priority sectors of artificial intelligence, biomanufacturing, clean tech, or quantum science.
