Type of Program:



The aim of the program is to assist theatre creators to develop new work.

Comments on Funding:

Funding will take the form of a grant of minimum $1,000, and maximum $3,000.
Due to the number of applications received and the limited funds available, grants awarded may be smaller than the amount requested.

Applicants must be:

  • professional theatre artists who are residents of Ontario with a permanent physical address in Ontario
  • ad hoc groups/collectives composed of a majority of Ontario residents.

Additionally, an individual must:

  • be a professional artist or arts professional. The OAC defines a professional artist or arts professional as someone who has developed skills through training or practice, is recognized by artists working in the same artistic tradition, has a history of public presentation or publication, seeks payment for their work and actively practices their art. Short breaks in artistic work history are acceptable.
  • be 18 years of age or older;
  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, or have an application pending for permanent resident status and, if requested, be able to provide documentation to verify this.

Additionally, ad hoc group or collective must:

  • have 50 per cent of its members residing in Ontario;
  • be comprised of at least two members who meet the eligibility requirements for individuals listed above and who will be responsible for the administration of the grant on behalf of the ad hoc group or collective;
  • not be a corporation;
  • be able to deposit a grant cheque in the name of the ad hoc group or collective.

Note: Ad hoc groups are formed for a one-time project, while collectives have ongoing activity.

Applications Steps:


Complete and submit an application in Nova, OAC’s online grant application system. Before applying, applicants must create or update their profile in Nova.

Applicants may apply for a maximum of five Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators each program year.

Documentation Needed:

The application must include:

    basic information about the project

    answers to the questions in the application: split into questions about artistic merit, impact and visibility.

    name of recommender
  4. 4
    artistic examples as required by the recommender theatre company
  5. 5
    support documents

Other Things to Note:

    The 2021-22 program is open from September 2021 until January 14, 2022. Note that the list of participating recommenders is posted in September 2021 when the program opens, and is subject to updates and changes during the program year.

    Applications accepted by recommenders from September 2021 to January 2022. OAC does not set deadlines in this program. Recommender theatre companies set their own schedules for review of applications. See the Recommenders for Theatre Creators page for application deadlines.
