Ontario Genomics – Genomic Applications Partnership Program

Description:

The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) funds downstream research and development (R&D) projects that address real-world opportunities and challenges defined by “Receptor” organizations such as industry, government, or not-for-profit entities. These organizations should have the expertise, resources and commitment to commercialize or implement the project’s outcomes.

Comments on Funding:

  1. Funding is up to 1/3 investment from Genome Canada.
  2. Receptor co-funding (cash and/or in-kind) should be equal to or greater than Genome Canada’s contribution; and any remaining co-funding from other eligible sources.
  3. The total project size is $300,000 to $6 million.

Eligibility:

An academic researcher must:

  • be a faculty member of a Canadian university or affiliated, non-commercial entity, such as hospitals and research institutes.
  • be a researcher in not-for-profit corporations and registered charities (may qualify as Academics for the purposes of GAPP if their organization has an explicit research mandate).

Eligible Receptors must:

  • be companies (private / public, Canadian / foreign-owned);
  • be industry consortia;
  • be government departments and agencies (federal, provincial and municipal);
  • be healthcare organizations;
  • be not-for-profit organizations;
  • small or start-up companies that have a clear business model and credible indication of traction in their industry;
  • be companies that are owned by or employ the Academic Project Leader must demonstrate that they have their own business office and staff, physically separated from the Academic’s laboratory and independently governed (e.g., by a dedicated executive team and Board of Directors);
  • If the Academic has a position with the Receptor, this must be clearly described in the proposal. The Receptor must have clear decision-making processes independent of the Academic Leader.

To be eligible for the GAPP, a project must:

  • develop and apply a genomics-derived or genomics-enabling tool, product or process to an opportunity or challenge defined by the Receptor(s);
  • focus on late stage R&D that will position the innovation for near-term implementation/commercialization;
  • be co-led by an academic and a Receptor organization in partnership, with active and necessary roles for both; and
  • demonstrate the potential to generate significant social and/or economic benefits for Canada.

Applications Steps:

Applicants (teams) must:

a) present practice pitch to Ontario Genomics before official pitch to Genome Canada.

    a) submit draft applications to Ontario Genomics for panel review before submission to Genome Canada.

    Documentation Needed:

    Successful applicants who will advance to the next stage must submit a supplementary proposal which provides a more thorough description of several sections of the EOI, including a detailed explanation of the technical aspects, project plan and budget.

    Other Things to Note:

    Genome Canada is a catalyst for the development and application of genomics knowledge and technology for the benefit of Canadians, with emphasis on strategically important sectors (human health, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, energy, mining, and environment).
