Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada – Strategic Innovation Fund Stream 5: National Innovation Ecosystems (2022)

Description:

The Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) is a program that provides repayable and non-repayable contributions. Its National Innovation Ecosystems stream will support large-scale national ecosystems through high impact collaborations between small, medium and large corporations, academic and research institutions, and not-for-profit organization to support Canadian innovation ecosystems.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to 50% of total eligible costs, except for Recipients that are academic institutions for which the contribution is up to 100% of eligible costs.

Funding will take the form of non-repayable contributions.

The combined level of assistance from all governments (federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal) to any one Recipient shall not normally exceed 75% of eligible costs, except for Recipients that are academic institutions for which the maximum combined level of assistance would be 100%.

Eligibility:

Eligible applicants include Networks and Consortia (e.g. Canadian Universities and/or Colleges, research institutes, for-profit corporations, and/or not-for-profit entities) consisting of multiple members located throughout Canada.

Project proposals require a lead applicant, which must:

  • be either a not-for-profit organization incorporated in Canada or a for-profit corporation incorporated in Canada,
  • carry on business in Canada, 
  • be in collaboration with Canadian universities, colleges, research institutes, for-profit corporations (including SMEs) and/or not-for-profit entities,
  • propose to conduct industrial research and technology demonstration activities. 

Project activities in this Stream:

  • will be mainly within TRLs 3 to 7, but could cover the whole range of TRLs 1 to 9.
  • should support technology development to accelerate pathways to commercialization in areas of proven Canadian advantage.
  • should involve a high degree of collaboration to enhance supply chains and linkages between businesses and academia/research bodies.

Project proposals require a lead applicant, which will be responsible for submitting a Statement of Interest and a full application if advised to advance to Step 2 of the process, as well as managing the project for the duration of the SIF agreement.

  2. a full application, if invited

Other Things to Note:

Applications for this initiative are accepted on a continuing basis. There are no submission deadlines.
