Environmental Careers Organization of Canada (ECO Canada) Co-op Student Work Placement


The Co-op Student Placement wage subsidy covers up to 50% of a student’s wages to a maximum of $5,000 (or up to 70% of a student’s wages to a maximum of $7,500) when employers hire the brightest minds in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math (STEAM) and Business.

Federal funding, including the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), cannot exceed 100% of the wages earned when combined with the ECO Canada Student Work Placement (SWP) funding.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a wage subsidy of 50% of wages up to $5,000. Additional funding is available for underrepresented groups.

Applicants/ host organizations must:

  • be employers;
  • provide a paid work term in a STEAM/business role. Work terms are flexible (from work placements as short as 8 weeks, to a maximum of 16 weeks, that are full time or part time; placements must be a 180 hours, students will be able to work from home),
  • open a new position related to the environment or an environmental project.

Students must:

  • must be current post-secondary students;
  • must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or have Refugee status;
  • there is NO AGE RESTRICTION (Students over the age of 30 are eligible for the SWP funding).

Federal, Provincial, Territorial, and Municipal governments are not eligible under the Student Work Placement Program (Co-op).

Applications Steps:

Applicant must:


take the eligibility Quiz and complete the online host application to get approved,


find a Candidate for the approved position and have them apply (Employer hosts and approved Candidate become linked and contracts are issued.).

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must submit:
1. job title, description & training plan (for employers);
2. postsecondary program info and a resume (for candidates).
