Description:

The Export Assistance Program helps finance the international distribution of Canadian feature films, including the promotional campaign for theatrical release.

Comments on Funding:

Funding will be in the form of a non-repayable financial contribution, up to the lesser of the following amounts:
1. the minimum guarantee paid by the applicant for the acquisition of the exploitation rights of the project in all the eligible territories for which the applicant is applying; or
2. $45,000 per eligible territory, for a maximum cumulative amount of $90,000 per project.

Funding requests of less than $3,000 are not eligible.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

1. Be a company specializing in the theatrical distribution of films;
2. Not be a sales agent;
3. Own the rights to exploit an eligible project in one or more foreign territories;
4. Have paid a minimum guarantee equal or greater than $3,000 for the acquisition of the rights of the project on
such territories;
5. Be responsible for the effective exploitation of the project in these territories (the applicant cannot apply for funding in a territory that will be sub-distributed by a third party);
6. Have developed a marketing plan for the project in said territories;
7. Have committed to theatrically release the project within the upcoming year in said territories.
Telefilm may also take into account the financial stability of the applicant in determining eligibility.

Application Steps:

Applicants must submit a completed application form with all the required supporting documents electronically via Dialogue.

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must submit:
1. Rights acquisition contract;
2. Proof of payment of the sale’s amount disbursed at time of application;
3. Summary of the Promotion and Marketing Strategy (form available on Telefilm’s website);
4. Incorporation documents are required if they have been updated or modified since the applicant company’s last funding application to Telefilm Canada.
