The program supports literary activities through grants to artists, ad hoc groups, collectives and Francophone organizations in Ontario.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

For Creation and Creation/Recording Categories:
1. Be professional authors and spoken word artists who reside in Ontario.
2. Have published at least one book with a recognized publisher.
3. Have published at least three separate pieces of work (essays, short stories, poems, or other works) for which you have been paid (works that have won a competition are considered published).
4. Hold a publishing contract for a first work (other than the one that is the subject of the application).
5. Have written a play that has been published or professionally produced.
6. Having written a feature film that has been broadcast at a festival, on television or in theaters.
7. Be a professional screenwriter with at least two writing production credits for which you have been paid.
8. Have a track record of public presentations of dub poetry, sound poetry, performance poetry, storytelling or other genres of oral literature. Reading of texts is eligible only if it is of a highly performative nature.
9. Individual artists representing a group of artists – If you are creating a work in collaboration with one or more other artists (including a mentor), one of the artists must apply on behalf of the group. If the grant is awarded, the artist in question will receive a T4A slip and will assume responsibility for the grant on behalf of the collaborators. You may wish to attach a group history or a CV for each artist.

For Presentation/Influence Category:
1. Ad hoc groups and non-profit collectives composed of professional literary artists and of which at least 50% of the members reside in Ontario.
2. Non-profit organizations that have a head office in Ontario.
3. Book and periodical publishers whose head office is in Ontario. They may be of the following types:
a. a not-for-profit corporation incorporated in Ontario and having its head office in Ontario
b. a national not-for-profit corporation headquartered in Ontario.

Application Steps:

Applicants must complete and submit an application in Nova, OAC’s online grant application system. You will be able to do this approximately two months before the deadline.

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must submit:

1. basic information about the project.
2. answers to the questions asked in the application form
3. the project budget.
4. artistic examples:
a. Creation and Creation/Recording Categories:
i. For all genres other than oral literature: an excerpt of 5 to 15 pages from the work for which you are applying, in PDF format. For comics, the excerpt must be one or more PDFs of digital images and, as far as possible, presented in the same way as the final result.
ii.For oral literature only: one or two recordings of previous works. You may also submit a transcription of the recorded examples.
b. Presentation/Influence Category: an artistic example, if applicable.
5. supporting documents:
a. Creation and Creation/Recording Categories: Your track record of publication or performance in spoken literature. This should demonstrate that you meet the program’s eligibility criteria. You may also include key works in other areas related to your artistic practice.
b. Presentation/Influence Category: 2 examples of relevant documents (e.g. a promotional document, an invitation, a report, a brochure, a contract).
