Description:

The Summer Company program provides students aged 15 to 29 start-up money to kick-off a new summer business and advice and mentorship from local business leaders to help get the business up and running.
Applicants must start their business from May to July and end it on Labour Day or they can choose to keep running their summer business while in school.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to $3,000.
Applicants get up to $1,500 up front to help with start-up costs and up to $1,500 when they successfully complete the program requirements.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:
1. be a student (go to high school, college or university) between 15 and 29 years old (a parent or guardian must sign the application for applicants under 18);
2. be starting a new business (if unsure, contact the program provider);
3. be attending school and returning to school in the fall (this includes full-time, part-time, homeschooling, e-learning, distance learning, apprenticeships, trade schools, etc.);
4. be a resident of Ontario;
5. be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident;
6. not already be running a business,
7. not be working at another job or attending school for more than 12 hours per week during the duration of the program;
8. open almost any type of business, as long as it is a sole proprietorship or corporation (where the applicant is the majority shareholder), an independent business venture (not a part of an existing or family business), qualifies as “self-employed” for income tax purposes, operates in Ontario on a full-time basis and follows government rules for operating a business.
9. be following the Canada Revenue Agency definition of being self-employed;
10. be able to work over the summer program period:
a) a minimum of 280 hours if you’re a high school student
b) a minimum of 420 hours if you’re a post-secondary student.

Applicants must meet all of the above requirements. Exceptions might be approved.
Applicants who have received funding from Summer Company in the past are not eligible.

Application Steps:

Applicants must:
1. apply through a Small Business Enterprise Centre;
2. submit online an application inquiry;
3. submit an application, if requested;
4. participate to an interview, if selected.

Applicants must:
1. complete the online application inquiry and submit it,
2. submit an online application, including a business plan and a cash flow, if selected,
3. show their business name registration and any required licensing documents to their program provider for verification.
