Description:

The Translation component of Arts Across Canada provides grants to activities linked to the translation of Canadian literary works or dramatic works into French, English, an Aboriginal (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) language, American Sign Language (ASL), Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ), or any other regional Canadian or Indigenous sign language for Canadian publication or presentation.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a grant of up to $25,000 for each translation, plus an annual supplement for targeted costs.

Application Assistance funding is available for persons who are experiencing difficulty and self-identify as:
– an artist who is Deaf, hard of hearing, has a disability or is living with a mental illness;
– a First Nations, Inuit or Métis artist facing language, geographic and/or cultural barriers.

April 9, 2025

Eligibility:

Applicants must be:
1. literary publishers;
2. theatre and multidisciplinary groups and collectives;
3. theatre companies and dramaturgical organizations;
4. multidisciplinary organizations; 5. First Nations, Inuit and Métis groups or collectives;
6. First Nations, Inuit and Métis organizations;
7. deaf and disability arts organizations; 8. deaf and disability arts groups and collectives.

Application Steps:

Applicants must create an account and submit one or more profile(s) for validation at least 30 days before applying

Documentation Needed:

Applicants must submit:
1. a copy of the original book, script or video script (if submitting by mail, it must be postmarked on or before the deadline date);
2. the translator’s biography (if not already submitted with previous requests);
3. for literary works:
a) a signed copy of a contract with the publisher, author, literary agent or translation rights holder; and
b) a signed copy of the contract with the translator.
4. for dramatic works:
a) a signed copy of the letter of agreement between the applicant and the playwright, indicating the playwright’s approval of the translator; and
b) a signed copy of the letter of agreement between the applicant and the translator.

Other Things to Note:

Application limits are up to eight (8) translations per year.
